OK, the first album could have given them a look at
triple A, but
you're
right, all down hill from there.

Shawn says:
I completely disagree with this assessment of the
Judybats. Their first album was good, and had a few
really strong moments (primarily 'Daylight' and
'Native Son'), but it was on their second and third
that the band showed all their strengths -- catchy
songs, quirky - yet meaningful - topics, and, often,
heartbreaking melancholy. Down in the Shacks Where
the Satellite Dishes Grow has the sweet title track,
the slice-of-life 'Saturday' (sort of 'A Well
Respected Man' for the blue collar crowd), plus 'She's
Sad, She Said,' 'When Things Get Slow Around Here,'
'Weren't We Wild' - all pretty and sad.

Then there's Pain Makes You Beautiful, which has
perhaps the catchiest moment in the Judybats' body of
work - 'Ugly on the Outside' ("you're pure light,
you're pure light, pure deli-i-ight!"). Also some
really lovely stuff again, like 'Being Simple,'
'Wasting Time,' and even the title track.

The fourth album, and the comeback, six years later,
unfortunately are pretty abysmal.
