Lois Maffeo, whose albums are released simply under her first name, used to
call her band "The Lois," at least on stage.

The very last release on Flamingo Records -- and "released" is entirely too
grand a word, it more just sort of dribbled out vaguely while my attention
was preoccupied by a legal matter that I eventually "won," an equally
meaningless term in this context -- was an EP by a New York trio that
initially called itself simply "Larch." I asked, and sure enough, their
name was a reference to the old Monty Python bit, so I quite logically
asked, "Why aren't you THE Larch, then?" And so the EP came out under the
name The Larch.

New Radiant Storm King recommendation: Last year's WINTER'S KILL was pretty
awesome, particularly if you're into the last couple of Mercury Rev and
Grandaddy albums. Of their early records, I've always liked 1993's RIVAL
TIME, which has my personal fave of theirs, "The Opposing Engineer Sleeps
Alone."
