hi pop friends!

bob's solo stuff has been very spotty indeed. while "workbook" really worked for me, "black sheets of rain" was a sheeny downer (though "it's too late" was a great pop number stealing the "do ya" riff and then running with it). the record did seem to drone and i got tired of bob being pissed off and down about everything.

that's why sugar's "copper blue" was such a blast! bob was actually having fun again! so many great pop tracks on that disc. "beaster", though very dark and angry, has some beautiful noise. alas, it was to be the last release by bob that i enjoyed.

"file under easy listening" had a couple of poppy moments ("i can't believe what you're saying" was my fave), but it got filed under my "not in the mood for that" section. i haven't listened to it since, oh, 1994. then all of his solo stuff after that really bored me. yes, this faithful fan picked up every release up to and including the "last dog and pony show", but i didn't like any of them. he made a techno record a couple of years ago that i sampled and quickly put down in the record store. and my wife was shocked when i told her i had no interest in seeing him play live for free at a taste of minnesota concert stage a couple of summers ago. i'd read that he was playing mostly material from his techno record. yawn.

so, i'm hoping that the guy who brought me so much joy (i LOVE all the husker du albums and even named my first dog husker dude) reverts back to the form(s) that appealed to me. last i heard he was writing scripts for a professional wrestling show and working up another solo record in the vein of "workbook." i'm NOT kidding about that wrestling stint.

cheers and pop on!

p.s. i'm curious to read your opinions of the josh rouse "1972" disc. i ain't heard it yet, but reviews are intriguing me.
