From what the box set said Brian recorded the backing tracks on 3-4 tracks (at
Western/United, Sunset Sound and Gold Star studios), these were mixed down to
mono and then copied to a 8 track recorder at Columbia studios where the Beach
Boys added thier vocals on the other 7 tracks.
So after you synch up all those multi-tracks you have anywhere from 4 (for
songs with Brian's solo vocals) to 10 tracks to mix from. While that works
fine
for stereo, I always felt it would be impossible to do a realistic 5:1 mix
without using lots of reverb to fill in the holes. Sounds like they did just
that!
