So I've heard. A friend on one of the Beach Boys lists has been extracting
the different channels, and he said that the centre channel contains only
reverb, the .1 bass channel is inaudible, though looking at the waveform on
the computer shows a few spikes, and that of the four remaining channels two
are inaudibly different, though the waveforms are visibly different -
presumably from different amounts of reverb on each channel.
Essentially it seems to be a quad mix being sold as 5.1, though allowances
must be made for the fact that some of the multitracks are missing and the
majority of those that exist are only 4-track (at least for the
instruments - there are eight-track vocal tapes...)
