i thought cobain was one of the cannier choices on a mostly silly list, and i'm surprised that that pick in particular would raise negative eyebrows in a pop forum such as this one. cobain was an absolutely fantastic guitarist, and in a totally pop way. he probably couldn't play a mixolydian scale to save steve vai's life, and his fingers certainly couldn't keep up with eddie van halen's in a sprint, but unless you're looking to hire a second lead guitarist for your southern rock jam band, who cares?

great pop guitar playing requires competent fingers and a genius mind, and that's what cobain had. he wrote amazing little parts and found cool and raunchy sounds that served his songs, which is exactly what a great guitarist should do. his genius is not that he could play the solo in "smells like teen spirit" or the little lead line in "all apologies" or the basic rhythm of "rape me," all of which probably half the subscribers to this list could do. his genius is that he came up with those parts, and all those sounds, in the first place.

i second the nomination of bob mould to the list. and trust me, half of y'all could play all of mould's parts, too.

i thought george harrison should've been much higher than #21 (i wouldn't have complained if he was #1), and i was happy to see d. boon mentioned at all.

as for the whole list, of course it's silly. all lists in all magazines are silly. that's kinda sorta part of the point.

matty
