PS:
and I vividly recall taking SO much spiky heat from the nascent Toronto punk
scene during the Summer of Hate when I dared to publish a big glowing review
of that then just-released "Beach Boys Love You" in The Pig Paper
...yep, right there alongside raves o'er the Pistols and Ramones' latest
platters.
THEN I remember reading shortly thereafter an interview with "Love You"
engineer Earle Mankey (in Bomp! Magazine, was it??) where he related that it was
basically just he and Brian who recorded the bulk of that album, alone and
together and in somewhat of a great rush, in Brother Studios. The Boys were called
in to do their vocals later, then Carl his guitar, and then Carl and Earle
mixed it all down after BW flew the coup.
Which would explain why lots of those basic tracks (Brian's keys) were fed
directly into the board, "bass" parts included. And Earle would just throw
Brian out onto the studio floor with a snare drum whenever a backbeat was needed
(ie: "Let Us Go On This Way").
Yes, this spartan approach was called "minimal" at the time, and "new wave" a
year later... but, whatever it was/is, The Cars (at least) were listening
VERY closely indeed
;-)
Still honkin' after all these years,
Gary "and speaking of Buried Pleasures, check out the glowing four-star (!!)
review of Simply Saucer in the new MOJO" Pig
