I would agree with that - but I still think something like Here Today is
head and shoulders above My Love...

I read an interview with Costello once where he said he *did* tell McCartney
when he was writing bad stuff - but McCartney refused to listen, because he
was Paul McCartney and Costello wasn't...

I think he's done that throughout his solo career - look at Wild Life, or
releasing Mary Had A Little Lamb as a single. Even McCartney is in large
part unfinished sketches (much as I love that album). I think it's
intensified recently though. Driving Rain was one of the poorest albums I've
heard in a *long* time - and releasing From A Lover To A Friend as a single
was insanity. The verse/chorus is quite nice, but he seems to have decided
that rather than write a middle eight he'd just throw together a bunch of
random noodling and call it good enough, then repeat everything ad
nauseam...
