Don't get me wrong. I didn't say that I didn't like "Flowers In The Dirt". I
said that I thought "Back To The Egg" was his last great record. "Flowers"
was a phenomenal comeback record....I actually like it better than 'Tug Of
War' for a myriad of reasons. But, "Flowers" only hinted at what could have
been a massive hit record which was marred by some insipid throwaway tracks
(the aforementioned "Motor Of Love", "Ou Est Le Sloppay"), and production
styles from a fistful of different producers who were all mixed to sound
exactly the same [thus my comment about it all sounding homogenized].

Not sure I agree with Andrew's assertion that McCartney's sparse
non-emotional arrangements are his strongest. There's something to be said
for his bombastic epics which were melodically and dynamically driven.
McCartney needs to self-edit....and he doesn't know how...and no one has the
balls to tell him when he sucks....or else how do you explain insufferable
turds "Biker Like An Icon" or "Party Party". In the old days you could
always tell the difference between McCartney's unfinished experiments (which
he was smart enough to leave to B-sides) and his prized pigs. What's
happening now is that technology/boredom/need for relevence/desperation
(pick one or all of these) has allowed the experiments to float alongside
his mainstream material leaving albums half-finished. And I'm not sure I buy
the argument that he has earned the right to do this.

I think my biggest disappointment has been McCartney's inability to
recognize his strength is actually the silly love songs he lampooned in song
those many years ago. Elton John realized this and landed back on the hit
parade during a time when most other old-time hitmakers couldn't scrape the
bottom of the Top40.

Maybe McCartney just doesn't care about the craft anymore....we need MORE
"Flaming Pies" before I get all excited about his outtput again.
