I was never much of a Faith No More fan, but I knew enough about the band to
recognize Patton when he came into the Beverly Hills stereo store where I
worked in 1991. He was shopping for speakers, and he insisted on demoing
them with the treble maxed out on the amp! I tried every
low-key, polite way I could think of to point out what a hugely stupid
method of evaluation that was, but no go. I closed the sale, so what the
hell. My colleagues and I theorized that too many years of loud live sound
had taken the high end out of his ears. Anyway, I can never hear FNM
without thinking of that afternoon.
