My favorite power-pop single of all time is more than likely
Matthew Sweet's "Sick Of Myself". (It was released as a CD
single in 1995... that counts!) From the opening time-marking
chord chops to the multiple endings, that song has been
replayed in my various CD/MP3 devices more times than any other
song I can think of. It's punchy, it's got hooks to spare,
it's got Matthew's trademarked multi-tracked harmonies, it's
about a guy longing for a girl (she's so *perfect* that he's
"sick of himself" for being so *imperfect*), and it's about
three minutes long. The very definition of power-pop. You
know, I'm gonna go listen to it again right now.

My favorite power-pop album... An odd choice, but it would
probably have to be Velocity Girl's "Gilded Stars And
Zealous Hearts". They went from being a sort of post-punk-y
band to straight-ahead power-pop, in my opinion, and this,
their last album, was completely solid. Not a clunker in the
bunch. Earnest songs, fast bouncy songs, SUPERB vocals, and
hooks a'plenty. And the final song, "One Word", is just
marvelous. It's a summation of everything that made the
band great. And it's got a semi-sentimental edge over the
others in my collection as it's one of the first CDs I
bought when I moved to California, and it helped open my
eyes and ears to a new strata of music. God but I miss
that band. I miss them so much.

Don

NP: Matthew Sweet. Yay!
