Subject Whatever happened to Thom Bell?

OK, I know this is a wee bit off the beaten track for this group, seeing
as Thom Bell is known for Philly soul, not pop. But some of those classic
tracks he wrote and produced work for me as just great pop (Stylistics,
Delphonics, Spinners, Elton John :-) ).

So what happened to him? I checked and he's still alive, but he basically
seemed to retire after the '70s (producing a random song here or there 
since). Seems like a lot of talent to just pack up and go home with. Are
there personal issues?
