Ahhh ... more lists.
Top Power Pop Single: I'm going to go with Big Star's "13," for this one. I
don't think I've ever heard a more achingly beautiful song in my life. In
just a few words Chilton exactly nails all the awkwardness of young
adulthood. After all, how better to explain a crush than, "If it's so then
let me know/If it's no, then I can go/I won't make you ...." Then, that
soft, "oooh-ooh-oooh" at the end of the line. Beautiful guitar work --
especially on the live at WLIR record. Perfect.
Favorite Power Pop Record: Stands For deciBels, dB's.
In a perfect universe, every song on this record would have been a hit
single, and Holsapple/Stamey would have gone on to become platinum-selling
bazillionaires. This record is also home to two of the most finely crafted
singles of all time: "Judy," and "Big Brown Eyes."
