saw Sondre open for Elvis Costello here in vancouver.... just him and
his guitar... kind of boring and samey..
he has a charming between song fractured English patter... he's no
Rufus Wainwright.... no Dave Rave, either....
totally did NOT see any Donovan connection WHATSOEVER.... and I've
seen Donovan in concert....
maybe his records are wonderful and stuff... but maybe his label
should spring for another guy to tag along
on keys or something... the audience seemed to dig him... maybe I
expect more, maybe he should write more interesting songs or learn
more guitar... i don't know.... didn't really connect with me... the
cover tune he did seemed to be the highlight...

.... Elvis Costello
was an odd one, too... just him & steve nieve in basically a 2 hour
love letter to Diana Krall (she was probably in the wings & everyone
was half expecting she'd come out) & canada (he played
stuff from his new cd)... I hadn't seen him live since the 80s and
haven't paid much attention to his Kurt Weill aspirations but I was
pleasantly surprised - he took a lot of chances, singing acapella and
without a mike (his voice is STRONG)... and trying to make the
evening as intimate as he could.... the odd heckle ("we're falling
asleep up here") got Elvis up and at it and it certainly made me want
to check out where some of the more obscure songs came from.... very
interesting evening....
