Hey folks!
to answer to Steve about French Pop scene, I admit Ronnie Bird stuff is not
really pop, much more rock, this guy made some great singles and albums between
1965 and 1970. He covered many great songs (Stones, Bobby Fuller, Pretty
Things...) and with his help a lot of young frenchy people knew foreign bands. He
had a "Style" (clothes, pretty face, looks like Brian Jones). There's a good
compilation about him not so much easy to find.
Michel Polnareff is much more Poppy, his music is sometimes very near from
Left Banke and between 1966 and 1973, this guy was real must to all Pop lovers.
Great arrangements, terrifice voice, great piano player. In France there's a
nice box set with remastered 3 cds with all his hits released in 1997
-Universal- 60 pages booklet with lyrics.
Jacques Dutronc, an old Gainsbourg 'friend, was great too. Great ironic
lyrics and like Polnareff, his several hits between the second part of the 60s were
a must. Smart guy, sometimes romantic, sometimes ironic, the music is great
60s stuff.
So, for sure Gainsbourg is the most well known french artist probably in
Audities list but there's some others (with Antoine et les Problèmes, Surfs,
Christophe....)
If you want more, contact me off the list (cds to swap)
Thanks to Jean Marc Varlet, real connoisseur
cheers
