Subject Dion / Phil Spector "Born to Be With You" album: what a letdown!
Date Tue, 05 Aug 2003 16:12:05 -0400

[Part 1 text/plain us-ascii (13.7 kilobytes)] (View Text in a separate window)

So I've been searching for a copy of the legendary Phil Spector produced
Dion album "Born to Be With You" for years. This album, released in 1975,
but not in the US (for hazy reasons) has been described by many as "the
last great Phil Spector production".

So I was thrilled to finally get a copy, thanks the the Ace (UK) two-fer
reissue of BTBWY + Streetheart.

What a letdown. I would say this is HARDLY a great Phil Spector production.
In fact, I would say that the Ramones' Turn of the Century (which came
four years later and IS the last major Spector production) beats it
handily. Neither the songs nor the production really does much for me. Too
hazy, not enough good hooks. In fact, the best two songs on the album are
probably the two non-Spector productions that Spector or Warner Brothers
tossed on to fill out
an entire LP: The famous stray anti-drug single "Your Own Backyard" from 1969
(Dion sounding a bit like Kris Kristopherson) and "New York City Song", which
is a Cashman & West production, and is the only really catchy thing on here.
(Dion would later sign with Cashman & West's Lifesong Records and record a
critically lauded but poor selling album, The Return of the Wanderer).

The bonus track stray single "Baby Let's Stick Together" from a year later
(but probably just an outtake from the LP sessions) is actually better than
anything on the album. It's not great, but it's better.

The less said about Streetheart, the second album on the 2-fer, the better.
It's crap.

Oh well, another myth shot to hell by a reissue.
