COMIC STRIP is a good starting point, but you might also consider
diving in
with both feet and getting his masterpiece, HISTOIRE DE MELODY
NELSON.
Given your fondness for Scott Walker, I'm sure you would love this
album,
which has a very similar feel to what Scott was doing around the
same time
 (1971). (Snip)

Stewart, thanks! I will jump in and buy "Histoire De Melody Nelson"
especially given your Scott Walker reference. I tend to
prefer "proper" albums over "best of's" anyway (if the artist's work
merits it, naturally).

I would also recommend Serge's work with Brigitte Bardot, which
includes
many of his best songs. There's a fairly readily available French CD
called MASTER SERIE VOLUME 2 (note: no terminal S on Serie) that
covers the
Bardot/Gainsbourg era in detail and features "Contact," "Bubblegum,"
"Bonnie and Clyde" and the original and even pornier version of "Je
T'Aime...Moi Non Plus." (VOLUME 1 is Bardot's early '60s pre-
Gainsbourg
stuff, which is less interesting but not bad.)

And you know about France Gall already, right?
 (Snip)

All right then, I may be checking out Bardot as well!
Yes, I know of France Gall per prior discussions with you and a few
others. If I HAD to pick, I'd actually pick France Gall over
Francoise Hardy. But, both are wonderful to my ears.

PS: Two to three months ago, I ordered two previously recommended
(by several good Audities list members) "soft pop" discs by April
Stevens and Nino Tempo. I bought through Sam Goody's web site per I
had a "gift card" to burn. The "best of" disc finally arrived but
they didn't have "All Strung Out" in stock, after all. It's
disappointing to get this news after such a long wait. Still, it's
been great fun to hear the "best of". I'll just keep looking I
guess…….

Best, Steve D.
