<< I have nothing by Spanky and Our Gang (hssss). But, I would like to
correct this error. What's needed and can be found on CD? Stewart,
given your preference for the singles, I assume you'd suggest a "best
of", is there one that's the "best"? Welcome RSM. >>
Why, thanks!
Stewart's right about their singles. But my point was that this
particular album (WRoR) was another one of those delightful LP examples
of late 60s conceptual continuity and imaginative creativity. It just
flows, top to bottom; variety, humor, segues, trippy, edits,
genre-hopping... all the risky Pepperisms of the era. Side One,
especially, is killer. When it first came out, all in my camp were
amazed. There's a big Bob Dorough presence on it, as well.
The "Like to Get to Know You" album which preceeded it was pretty damn
good too (their Rubber Soul? :-). But the earlier and later S&OG albums
were rather generic. Great lite-pop, but not that creative, as LPs go.
I believe all you can get nowadays is a slightly expanded hits
collection (which is indeed top-notch essential, and includes 4 key WRoR
tracks, including Bash's fave 'And She's Mine.' My pick WRoR song is
'Since You've Gone.' MacFarlane's birdlike vocal gives goosebumps.).
So, find that album! It's a psychedelic yellow & solarized cover,
cleverly disguised as a big 45 (thus the double "B/W" LP title)! It
usedta be found everywhere in 99¢ bargain bins... Highly recommended.
And get this: it rocks!
"Jane, Jane, Jane... Jane, Jane, Jane..."
