I thought I might chime in on a few of my 2003 faves so far as well, since a
few of them haven't been mentioned on here yet:

OUTRAGEOUS CHERRY Supernatural Equinox
While I definitely enjoyed the previous two OC albums, I think that the
newest one is the one for me. Matthew Smith writes songs that I like, I love
the minimal drumming and there is still enough psychedelic freakout moments
to keep me really excited.

GRANDADDY Sumday
Okay, they might sound like ELO but I like them all the same.

SUPER FURRY ANIMALS Phantom Power
Despite the fact this just came out yesterday, I was lucky enough to receive
it a while back and really like it. The album is a little more focused and
low-key than their previous one, Rings Around The World, but there are some
great moments on it.

WIRE Send
A nice return to their more abrasive rock sound. Is that the right title for
it?

MANITOBA Up In Flames
An electronica album that emulates shoegaze. Who woulda thunk it?

THE DEADLY SNAKES Ode To Joy
Canada's best garage rock band currently still together?

Other records I've been digging that are to be released later this year:

GUIDED BY VOICES Earthquake Glue
They experiment a little on this new one (out Aug 19th) with a few
stop-start, mathy sounding songs, but there are also a few definite Pollard
pop gems. Not as good as Alien lanes, but nowhere near as dreck as Do The
Collapse

THE CONSTANTINES Shine A Light
Canadian quintet that the label I work at just missed signing a few years
back. They have become the toast of Toronto in the past few years. Not a pop
band, more like Fugazi meets Bruce Springsteen, this band should turn heads
in the US when their Sub Pop debut comes out in August.

BEULAH Yoko
I just got this last week and haven't had too much chance to listen to it in
its entirety yet, but so far so good. I think I might like it better than
their last one already, but their Until Your Hearstrings Break is still my
fave.

MY MORNING JACKET unsure of album title
I didn't get any info on the album when it arrived, but it sounds like
another cool collection by the hairiest band in rock.

Haven't heard yet but wanna:
CHEAP TRICK - is the new one even available in Canada?
GUIDED BY VOICES - upcoming box set on Matador
THE DEAD - recordings from shows on this tour, now available on CD after
each show

We put out some good records this year too, but that wouldn't be fair to put
them in a list and be critical, now would it? :)

Cheers

Sean Palmerston
