I recall an unusual promotion that pop station WBLI-FM (106.1) ran back in the early '80s for its Long Island, NY listeners. They had full-page ads in the local paper, Newsday, announcing the line-up of the "greatest live radio concert event ever." There were dozens of hit bands listed (ELO, Boston, Doobie Brothers, Rolling Stones, etc.), each with a 30 minute to 2 hour time slot (kind of an early version of Live Aid, by the way). The whole weekend, they played either actual live recordings by these bands, or standard studio recordings augmented by fake live cheering throughout the song (e.g., Christopher Cross). It was really goofy, but kind of fun to tune in at various time and pretend...
BTW, how come Live Aid hasn't come out on DVD - too much trouble with the licensing? There weren't a lot of acts I'd be interested in seeing, other than The Style Council, Boomtown Rats, U-2, Queen, The Who, and a few others, but I think that would sell pretty well.
Be seeing you,
Bill
