I got to catch the King Radio set last night when they
played in NYC at the Mercury Lounge and I've got to
say, I have never seen anything quite like it. Really
great music and my only complaint is that I wish they
had been able to play longer. (Well, I could complain
that for the second night in a row Joe Pernice stood
them up in his promise to get on stage with them for a
show... but whatever.) I knew I was in for something
totally unusual when I was standing out in front of
the club and saw a member of the band carrying in an
old typewriter-- had no idea it would end up being
used as a percussion instrument. Way cool. They
sounded great (hey, I'm just a fan, not a musician, so
I don't judge all the technical aspects-- to me they
sounded pretty darn good), Frank has an incredible
voice, writes wonderful pop songs and he's a really
nice guy to boot-- got to speak with him briefly
afterwards and he didn't even make fun of the fact
that I had completely nonsensical answers to questions
he asked me. (I'm partially deaf in one ear from
going to waaaaaay too many loud shows, so talking to
me in a club after listening to music is sort of like
talking to your half-deaf, senile grandma: "How are
you feeling today, grandma?" "Who am I feeling? I
didn't touch anyone!")
I wish more people had been there to see KR play. Why
don't more people go out a bit earlier to catch the
opening bands? It was the same situation when I saw
Frank Bango open for the Pernice Brothers at
Southpaw-- where is everyone? Is it not "cool" to
show up at a venue before 10:30? I've never
understood this.
Anyway, anyone wanting to see the Pernice Brothers
tonight at Mercury Lounge, do get on-line and get
tickets. They sold out last night about 2 minutes
after the doors opened.
