Hi,
I was just telling another auditeer on Sunday how much I loved this song by
Fountains of Wayne. I'll table talking about the beautiful melody and
performance to discuss my interpretation of the lyric.
On one level, it's about a young man on top of his game, with his life ahead of
him. He's got a loving fiance and family and is the quarterback for his school
team. More than that, he's such a good player that even when time is running
out on the clock, he instinctively knows he can make the big play to win the
game.
But on another level, given the context of this song on this album, I can't
help but wonder if in a few years he might find himself sleeping drunk on a
planter at the Port Authority bus terminal in a dead end job, his girl friend
having recently left him.
