well... a lot of the jazz festivals sort of plan their schedules so
that major artists could actually incorporate the festivals into a
national tour... i know that the jazz fests in Canada do that as do
the folk fests... the bookers
get together & see if they can co-ordinate some of the bigger acts
into the circuit, and in some cases, utilize
collective buying power...
we have enough people on this list involved in bands & with venues
that you could conceivably create
a month or two months of local pop events that could be strung
together as a tour by some bands or a holiday road trip for fans...
i am totally into constructive panels & get togethers.... i am
actually getting together with an old buddy
next week to brainstorm as he and i used to both work at EMI Canada
but he's out of the biz now & into
a whole other retail area and i figured he might have fresh ideas
that could lead to some light bulbs going off
in terms of how to approach a constantly shifting playing field.... i
know things suck so why listen to other people tell me that.... i
want to hear what innovative things other people are doing.... no
question the future (for now) is the power of the live gig which is
something the folk guys have cultivated for years, and the house
concert, alternate venue route and bands linking up for joint tours
(i get depressed dealing with the same negative club guys who don't
really do anything to help promote gigs or local talent or anything
except complain.... it does wear you down). I'm selling cds at my
booth at used record shows & even comic book shows... it works!
some of the posts addressing some of these issues have been pretty amazing...
some of the best resources are right here on this list
co-ordinating these panels around the IPOs could be great, that way
there could be three or four of them per year
and on-going dialogue.... speaking as a guy with an indie label, it
would be great to see where and how resources could be pooled...
jaimie's Bullseye and i are co-ordinating resources on both sides of
the border and this barter of various expertises is something i've
always championed.... kharmic banking... put something in - get
something out...
