I like Leticia, ended up going to both First Ave (for Ben Lee and FOW)
and then the Fine Line for (The Tyde and The Pernice Brothers).
First an aside. I had posted a few weeks ago that the FOW show was going
to be sold out here in Minneapolis. I was wrong. I had listened to First
Ave's recorded message on shows upcoming. I swear the woman's voice on the
recording said "The Wayne show will be sold out soon and an all ages show
has been added". I ended up calling later in the week only to find that
they expected a large crowd but not a sold out show. Not sure what I really
had originally heard. I will say, I think the one job requirement for
announcing these upcoming shows for First Ave, is being able to take a
handful of Quaaludes prior to speaking. : )

So in any event, I went to the FOW show.

Quick reviews and my subjective letter grade.

Ben Lee: He really didn't do it for me, although many in the crowd were
clearly fans. Reedy limited voice, songs just didn't grab me. He did a
cover of Cheap Trick's "Surrender" and The Smiths "Shoplifters of the World"
(the later was my fav moment of his set). I will not forget the show for
one of the odder stage banter moments I've heard in a while. At one point
during the show he said to a male fan yelling out requests.... "If your c*ck
is as big as your mouth come meet me after the show". Grade C-

FOW: This is the first time I've caught them live. I changed my tune about
going to see them in part because of all the discussion we've had lately
(and my figuring out that it wouldn't be a "sardine like" night out after
all). They put on a very good show. I was very happy I went. Still that
said, for me they didn't pull off a show that elevated itself into the
"can't miss them when they come to town". All in all a very good show
though. Hey Jocelyn, Chris smiled 6 times and laughed once at a joke Adam
made! So, I guess we caught him on a loose night. That said, he doesn't see
like someone who loves being on stage and thus, to me, may keep them from
being truly "great performers". However, still a very fun show from a dam
good band. Grade B+

The Tyde: Somehow I had not heard of them (Leticia thanks for the tip). I
really enjoyed the show. Really cool sound with a keyboard. They have kind
of a loose unkempt appeal. They reminded me of throwing the Byrds, Donavon
and a dash of the Cars thrown into a blender. That may not be accurate but
that's what came to mind. The night ended with them doing a distorted jam.
However, what struck me as funny is Rick M. just stood up while they were
jamming, by his drums waiting for them end, I presume so he could start
taking down his drum kit. I bought the CD "Twice" and I'm liking most of
it a lot. Grade B

The Pernice Brothers: This is was the show that transcends and lifted me
above seeing "just another good band". This was a fabulous show! One I will
remember. Joe was in great voice and the bands sound was both tight and
full. Joe has this quite but commanding stage presence. He seems to really
be in the moment of the performance. The drummer filling in from the Bigger
Lovers was a kick. This was the second time I've caught them and this was a
bit better show then the prior one. This is the not to be missed show
(IMO). Grade A+

NP: Johnny Horton
