Ah...memories...
Those were different time...WAY different times...when you could find
a record department in almost any variety store, from the local drugstore
(Walgreens, Skaggs, Thrify, etc. in my case) to department stores (Macy's, Grant,
etc.) Not to mention real record stores. The non "real" record stores were
best for 45s--they frequently had good prices on those. I bought most of my
early 45s at the JC Penny's in the Christown Mall in Phoenix in the very
early '70s. (But my first real 45 purchase was I Think I Love You by the
Partridge Family at Walgreens).
What I really miss about those record departments is that most of them carried
a lot of cutouts. Boy, you could find some gems in the cutout bins if you knew
what you were doing (I am not sure I did at the time :-)).
I remember scouring the cutout bins back when I didn't have much money, trying to
find that gem that would justify my 33 cents (!!!) I managed to get several of the
early Animals albums (on MGM) that way from the local Thrifty Drug.
The best cutout sale of my adult (read: clued-in) existance will always be the one
Zody's (RIP) had around the Spring of 1980. They purchased a boatload of
cutout stuff from some warehouse that must have been clearing shelves that hadn't
been cleared in years. It was available for 3/$1 (mostly), with some titles
seemingly randomly priced at $0.99. TONS of Motown stuff (mostly early to mid
'70s). Found obscurities like (Billy Joel's) The Hassles, (Chevy Chase's) Chamelon
Church, (David Lindley's) Kalidescope, and other things like that. Also, lots of
good '70s soul...Some really great stuff...The fitting cap to the end of an era,
at right about the time things changed...(1980 was probably the time when a lot of
the variety stores stopped carrying music).
