Before I get to Mike's message, does anyone remember Cheap Thrills in
New Brunswick NJ? That's where I spent most of my high school dollars.
Always a great used and cheap section. Korvettes was another, but by
the time I got to my prime music buying years, they were gone. In fact,
my summer job after freshman year at Clemson was to gut what I think was
the last Korvettes in Jersey (Woodbridge - Rts 1 and 9). I think my dad
brought me to Korvettes to buy the first Klaatu LP when it came out. Or
maybe it was Two Guys.

Back to Mike and the Greensboro references, the Peaches on High Point Rd
just closed around a year ago. I stopped in there from time to time,
but don't think I ever found anything to buy. School Kids is still
around, or at least a CD store at the location. It may have changed
owners/names, and I credit one of the guys there for turning me on to
the Flashing Lights. I always stop in for a quick browse when we eat at
New York Pizza - the only place to get decent pizza here in Mayberry.
The Record Exchange is probably the best place to shop around here, but
that's not saying much. It's about as big as my living room, and I
think I have more CDs than they do. We got a family season pass to
Carowinds this year just so I could stop at the Manifest Discs in
Charlotte on a regular basis. Now the kids all jump when I ask who
wants to drive to Charlotte to shop for CDs!

Ahh, Peaches. There was one in Greensboro, NC up until the mid 90's.
I remember it opened in June of 1978 when I was in high school. I and
my music obsessed buddies used to hang out there, as a couple of our
little rock posse had jobs there. Before that we used to go to a place
called School Kids Records near the UNC-G campus. We still bought our
stuff there as new LP's were $3.99 or $4.99. Peaches had the
unmitigated gall to charge $5.99. Just browsing through Peaches' racks
one could be hipped to scads of new music. I bought a single by the
Jam (All Around the World) purely on a whim and it changed my life.

In 1980 I went to work at the Record Exchange in Greensboro and soon
it became the hip place by records and was the first shop in town to
deal in used records. I spent three years there.

Back on the early vinyl memories, Kings discount store in G'boro is
where I used to ogle albums I wanted. The place was an absolute dump.
It made the skankiest K-mart look like Nordstrom. They had a fantastic
record department and a bad-ass GI Joe "department" where they had
every little accessory one could want for his Joes.

The first record I remember buying was a Paul Revere & the Raiders LP
called "Shake Rattle & Roll". I think it was some sort of Pickwick
cash-in. It was about 1970 and it had a glorious psychedelic cover
that had a lot in common with XTC's "Oranges & Lemons". The music on
it was a very early version of the Raiders running thru some '50's
R&R standards. Kinda weak and in no way psychedelic. I think I bought
it because if was the only Raiders LP my brother didn't have.

Oh and my dad looked kinda like a cross between Sean Connery & Greg
Peck. My kids will say I look like Dom Deluise. I had a beard for
about a month and looked like Mr. French on Family Affair.

Lastly...

I have joined a new combo called Sugar Frosted Bombs with Tom
Meltzer (x-5 Chinese Brothers, Robbie Fulks, etc.), Eddie Watkins
(x-Polvo) and Jeff Hart (& the Ruins, solo guy). It's very rockin
affair and no signs of alt country, math rock or folk. We will be
having our shambolic and under-rehearsed first gig on Friday the 25th
of July at the Bynum General Store in beautiful downtown Bynum, NC on
the shores of the River Haw. I think we play at 8pm... Charter your
flights!

Mike
