Hey Bill. E.J. Korvettes was in St. Louis? I thought they were just a New
York City/Long Island chain. How big were they?

Korvettes in West Islip was probably the best record department along with
Times Square Stores, which was a few miles down the road in Babylon. Low
prices, too. Yeah, I'd forgotten about those label sales. They were pretty
complete too, like if Columbia was on sale, so would Epic and other
divisions with it. That was where I completed my Dylan collection up to 70
or so. There was one right across from Macy's on 34th Street too, that moved
in when Saks 34th Street went out of business.

My first record purchases were at May's though (not to be confused with May
Company,) another discount store with really low priced records. My mother
would drag me around Jamaica from one clothing store to another. My bribe
was a waffle ice cream sandwich or sno-cone at Woolworth's (where we had to
walk past civil rights marchers blocking the way) and often three dollars to
spend at the May's record department. First LP's I bought were "Murray the
K's Boss Golden Gassers of 1962", "Jocko's 20 Original Golden Oldies Volume
4", and "Introducing the Beatles". Three dollars would cover a Mono LP or 3
singles back then.

All those big old discount stores are long gone now, Korvettes, S. Klein on
the Square, Mays, Time Square Stores, Great Eastern Mills, Two Guys, and
Grants. They were definitely the best places to buy records at the time,
even when I had a car and more than three dollars.

Ray
