Growing up in St. Louis, the best 'chain store' music department had to
be EJ Korvette's. I would tear to the Sunday paper because Korvette's
would put entire labels on sale, not just the new releases of the week.
It was one of the main reasons I started to know who was on what label.
And because the labels actually signed bands and let them have a few LPs
to mature, you could pick up someone's entire catalog for next to
nothing. It didn't hurt the stores' credibility that Mark Klose, who was
on the top radio station breaking artists at the time, K-SHE, worked
there part time. The interesting part is that Klose and K-SHE are still
going strong - though not at the same frequency. Korvette's on the other
hand has joined fellow retailers like Zayre in the great checkout line
in the sky.
