~~~~~what a show!!! what a show!!!! does a show *ever*
get all of us out like that?  what a show!!
the (cabaret...i love that you still call it that,
greg. i was just thinking of that yesterday afternoon.
why did they get rid of their cabaret moniker/status?)
metro took down the barricade that has been the status
quo for at least 4 years, due to the fact that at
shows like FOW, silly drunken kids and frat boys (i
know, i know, i need to re-evaluate this resentment of
mine. just not this second.) would mosh and bodysurf
to the most inappropriate bands.
apparently, metro management had faith in the FOW
fanbase or something, because as a girl standing next
to me said (who first saw FOW in '96 -- on her
THIRTEENTH birthday, no less!!!!), 'i've been to metro
to see my friend's bands where there were 20 people
and the barricade was up!'
the lack of barricade allowed me to be standing right
next to the stage, front and center, allowing me the
pleasure of holding the lyrics to surrender for ben
lee (more on that later), and to gaze upon the
countenance of chris collingsworth....well....sort of.
 at one point, i wanted to yell:  could you manage a
frickin' smile?  i mean, ranging from disinterested to
pissed to god, will this end, to maybe, possibly,
perhaps, was that mildly amused??  it made me wonder
if they have a good time or what. is this FUN for
them? is this rote?  is this just paying the bills?  i
saw adam break out a few decent slow smiles every now
and again, and it made me a little more hopeful.  but,
c'mon guys, show a little something something.
standing that close to the stage killed me in that i
was getting a LOT of guitar and not a lot of great
harmonies, although after the first two songs, someone
yelled "turn the vocals up!" and chris said, "i was
thinking the same thing!"  so, that helped some.
after that, i rocked out mightily and danced my ass
off.  what is with that, btw?  is dancing just not
okay? i mean, is it not powerpop? is it not pop rock?
am i the sole dancer?  i wanted to slap the hell out
of the girl next to me.  i could be so wrong, but the
WHOLE show as i was dancing, she kept glancing my way
and smirking and then nodding to her boyfriend and
sometimes making comments....mind you, he was singing
along, *every single word.*  so... i don't know if she
was there cause he was there, or just thought i was a
supreme dork or what.  ultimately, i thought: fuck
her, but still.  grrr.
okay, the songs, the songs.  fat, great, loud, rocking
killer songs.  they played all your favorite hits.
LOL.  what hits? well, they're hits to me.  so so
good.  highlights of course...denise, red dragon
tattoo, utopia parkway, leave the biker, mexican wine,
bright future in sales, and that damn stacy's mom song
that i thought i hated due to subject matter, but i
found that was the song i'd be walking down the street
going: stacy's mom has got it going on.... FUCK! i'm
sold for hook.  oh well.  it was a great night of
rock.  yum! i'm so glad i went, even though the ticket
was a little bit pricey for this girl ($17.50) . i'm
so kenny.
re: ben lee.  reports from audities lent me to be
predisposed favorably.  the crowded house refs had me
going in having a good thought.  also, i think because
i was just psyched for FOW, i was in way good mood.  i
didn't realize b. lee was from aussie land....duh.
once i heard the accent, i couldn't stop hearing neil
finn.  he used some electronic drum backing tracks,
and then once i thought: david gray.  which is not a
bad thing, imo.  i was not running to buy the album
(which was available for the first time ever, hot off
the presses, in america that night..in stores aug
10/12th?), but i'd be curious to hear what the songs
sounded like on record.  i dug several songs.... and i
thought he was quite 'cute' at times (in the
personality sense, not necessarily looks wise... cute
in the john lennon wise ass sense).  all in all, i
give him a 7.5.
reporting from chicago, i'm jocelyn geboy.
