I've seen the full band FoW three times and this was the 'peppiest' I've
seen the band. They seemed to be having a really good time on stage. In
addition to Greg, IPO merch maven Patti was there, Mark Madler, Peter Kuehl
and Kathy, Jocelyn, Shawn, Dale, Kevin Hunt, Mark Watson, Big Blast record
jefe Kirk Fox, Steve and Liam of Frisbie and some other folks I'm
forgetting. Not a sold out show -- I'd guess 800 or so in attendance, but
most of that number were rabid fans, taking a chorus of "Sink to the Bottom"
and providing loads of encouragement.

The second encore was ferocious -- the band 'jammed' on "Go Hippie", playing
with a heretofore unknown gusto that I really dug.

The Yang to FoW's Yin was the utterly mediocre (at best) performance of Ben
Lee. This guy is the high school athlete who peaked -- when his voice
changed, things went down hill -- combining a lack of range with incipient
flatness and songs that highlight these weaknesses, it was watching a coffee
house opening act playing on a national tour. He did a cute acoustic take
on Cheap Trick's "Surrender" and a weak version of The Smiths' "Shoplifter
of the World" -- both put his own songs in relief. He still got a pretty
good crowd reaction -- one only wonders how the crowd would have responded
to someone who does this thing real well, like Adam Marsland...

FoW played Chicago's Cabaret Metro tonight, incidentally -- lots of
>Auditeers in attendance, all of whom seemed to leave the joint very happy.
>The band sounded terrific, and although they seemed to be their usual
>dyspeptic selves with regard to their stage demeanor (particularly Chris
>Collingwood, who may be the most dour frontman in power pop), they still
>managed to have fun in their own way. F'rinstance, in introducing "Red
>Dragon Tattoo" Schlesinger talked Collingwood into substituting "Cradle Of
>Filth" for "Korn" in the lyrics, which Collingwood gamely attempted. And
>they've revived their random, let's-stump-each-other medley in "Radiation
>Vibe" -- tonight they made a go at, consecutively, "Carry On Wayward Son"
>by
>Kansas (the crowd sang a portion of the song, which prompted Collingwood to
>remark, "You guys should be ashamed of yourselves."); "Let's Go" by the
>Cars; "Life's Been Good" by Joe Walsh; and "Sharp-Dressed Man" by ZZ Top,
>which segued very nicely back into "Radiation Vibe". Hey, I don't much care
>if the band's facial expressions convey a disinterested air, as long as
>they're obviously having fun with their set and making the people happy.
