I'll see you your hyphens and raise you one eyebrow:

I'm guilty of judging Bends-era Radiohead by a
piss-poor performance they gave opening for (of all
people) Belly here in chicago...thom yorke seemed so
wretched and plaintive and OFFKEY (particularly in a
thoroughly uninspired and cringe-inducing duet of
"Untogether" with Tanya Donnelly) that i swore right
then i'd never touch anything they did. I still don't
think i've heard a song off the bends except "creep,"
which, not surprisingly, i thereafter found to be
wretched, plaintive and offkey.

on the other hand, i caught some 120 minutes type
showing of a video from OK Computer and was, as you
say, mesmerized, by the eerily beautiful wretched,
plaintive music and the strange-cool animation that
accompanied it. upon being notified that it was
radiohead i ate some crow long enough to discover that
i ADORED ok computer, but nothing else (ie, Kid or
Amnesiac) has done as much for me, and as mentioned, i
still haven't plucked up the gumption to try the Bends
(also because i hate the cover. Yes, i really am that
shallow.)

in their progression from next-big-thing alternative
radio darlings to towering lodestones of indie-land, i
guess it was only the transition period that caught
and held me, and neither of the poles to and from
which they've moved. your mileage, as has been
extensively noted, may vary.

by the way, speaking of indie land, i've been catching
up again and dropped some $$ last night for some
newish stuff (new to me):

Grandaddy "sumday": so far not as grabbing-me as
Sophtware Slump was, but still damn good. I see the
radiohead connection, but there never seems to be
anything as BIG, as dramatic and overblown (in a good
way) as on Ok comp...nevertheless, these are
thoughtful little pieces of synthy guitar pop, and if
you already like this i urge you to try Pinback.

System and Station - a recent happy discovery, from
portland by way of Madison WI - more indie-prog than
typical audities fare, but still kickin' melodies and
artful, but not artyfarty, time sigs and so forth...
owing a debt to pavement, perhaps, and built to spill,
surely, but not so heart-on-sleevish lyrically as Doug
M; more observational and CONversational. supergreat!
i have "if you find me let me know," which is not for
sale on their website yet, but if you write em they'll
sell it to you - i have some backcatalog on order.

zwan - overcoming my inveterate dislike of billy
corgan, i give this one a try mostly because reviews
promised a little more sunshine than could be found on
pumpkins' discs...and that was the case, after one
listen, though i also found that nothing much stuck
after only one listen also, and i still am not fond of
his voice. anyone else have an opinion on this? was
the push on this cd nation/world wide anywhere near as
big as it was in chicago?

alkaline trio "good mourning"- continuing to be
obsessed with this beautiful, confessional, driving
music - in perticular i like "all on black," which i
understand has gotten some radio play? and why am i
comparing this mentally to what Morphine might have
been if they grew up in the shadow of steve albini?

more to come..centromatic, queens of the stone age,
"lapalco", beulah, on's second release "make
believe,"....crap, i got a lot of catching up to do!

keep the half-way through the year lists coming - I
like reading about the stuff i'll be listening to next
summer!
