In other words, don't sell your friends and neighbors short just
because they aren't "into the pop thing." You should be able to
convince
them to attend a house concert based upon the fact that *you're* the
one who
is making the pitch and playing the host -- not to mention the fact
that
it's an informal, kid-friendly, local, and relaxed setting. It sounds
to me
as though seeing an artist or band win over new fans in your own
backyard or
living room is half the fun of hosting these things, anyway.

DITTO!! As I have said before. I have now hosted 3 house shows. My
neighbours are not into power pop. Most retire to their homes at 8pm
at night. My advice to Pat or anyone considering doing this is, just
try it.
If you make it "cosy" for your friends and neighbours then those even
remotely interested will show up and most will LOVE it. Last time,
we were at full capacity when Adam played! That was a Tuesday, had it
been a week-end night, I'm not sure what we would have done. Most of
these people don't go too much in terms of live music and virtually
no one had any idea what a "living room show" was prior to
attending. I said it before, beside the great music, the shows only
served to foster a feel of community. For me, the importance of that
is huge.

My advice for what it is worth.
Dare to ask someone you'd like to see if they ever would like to put
on a living room show. If they are even remotely interested, they'll
put it in the back of their mind and at some point it might work to
come to your town.
I'd suggest thinking not only about whom you like but whom you guess
would do well in an intimate setting. CVS and Adam Marsland fit the
bill for me on both accounts and succeeded in every sense of the
word.
Then as I said, invite friends and neighbours, make it comfortable,
provide some beverages and snacks, and let the kids come if you
desire......it will be a night you'll always remember.
It's really not that hard, in fact, it's so much fun.

Ira has said all so well before....

Lastly, I mainly am saying this again for it is such a nice way to
support an indep artist and provide something special for your
friends and neighbours.

Steve
