Mando Diao's BRING 'EM IN (out next month on Mute) has a new
copy-protection device that I hadn't seen before. When I put the disc in
my computer, a screen comes up that says that my computer must "update"
some files before the record can be listened to. In other words, they want
to install a data miner on my hard drive to monitor what I do with their
CD. Monitor this, Mute: your disc is now in my wastebasket, and the print
review you solicited by sending me the disc in the first place is entirely
about this new device of yours (which crashed my computer the first several
times I tried to listen to it) and the fact that making me feel like a
criminal while I'm basically DOING YOU A FAVOR by drumming up some advance
press for your new baby band is not the way to endear me to you, no matter
how much I agree philosophically with your aversion to copyrtight theft.
