If you want to get REAL technical about it, I think "Face To Face" is the
beginning of the golden era, their "Help/not-quite-revolver" album, amazing
songs interspersed with a few backpeddles into ravers and some experiments
gone awry. "Village Green" is certainly their best, but "Lola" is my
favorite album for personal/emotional reasons. It changed my life. "Arthur"
is the other record widely debated to be the Kinks' masterpiece. I
understand why - "Shangri-La", "Young and innocent days"... heck, "Victoria"
and "Brainwashed" are great rock tunes.
Where to start:
There's a Rhino "Greatest hits" which covers just the early singles,
bypassing any immediate need to buy the first few records. I think this
greatest hits was replaced recently by supposedly "remastered" versions but
I can't vouch for it.
"Village Green Preservation Society"
And go from there :)
"Something Else"
"Lola vs the powerman..."
"Arthur"
"Come Dancing: The best of the kinks 1977-1986"
Then you'll basically know what era you like the most and what to focus on.
They've got 35 albums, for cryin' out loud.
