I haqve a friend (Henry, if you're still out there, its Bill Rose) who tells
this story on himself.  At the time of Tom Petty's first album, Petty
performed at his college, and my friiend (no names please) worked at the
radio station, so he got to interview Petty.  It was his first exposure to a
"rock star."  At the time, McGuinn had a solo album out on which he
performed "American Girl."  My unnamed friend asked Petty, "What made you
cover that Roger McGuinn song, "American Girl?"  Petty, slightly agitated,
said "Hey man, I wrote that!"
