I had the distinct pleasure of hearing a handful of songs from Adam
Marsland's forthcoming solo album last weekend (thanks Adam!). I'll come
right out and say it: after the sublime "Ludlow 6:18" album, I had my doubts
that Adam would be able (let alone willing) to build on that rock-solid
foundation. And, after hearing a few of his new songs performed live last
winter, some of my doubts were somewhat confirmed. Any preconceptions I had
might have had were systematically obliterated after hearing the studio
versions. Obviously, I only heard a few of the songs, and it's quite
possible that I wasn't in my right mind at the time, but suffice it to say
that the songs sounded great, with lots of varied instrumentation -- many
performed by a virtual who's who of the LA pop scene -- and featuring
intricate, attention-to-detail arrangements, something at which Marsland
excels. Adam's main band (Severo on bass, guitars and vocals, Kurt Medlin on
drums, and Adam on keys, guitars and vocals) sound *incredible*, and, with
production once again by Adam and Steve Refling, I feel as if I'm witnessing
the genesis of a formidable music-producing machine. This is definitely one
of my most highly anticipated releases of this year.

On another note, I've systematically given away my few copies of "Ludlow
6:18" here and there over the last couple of years, spreading the good word.
I'd given away my last copy about six months or so, and I hadn't heard the
record in quite awhile. I replenished my supply over the weekend and had
myself a nice listen last night, outside under warm San Fernando Valley
skies, and I'm happy to say that this album continues to affect me on a very
personal level. Amazing.
