I'll be on the other coast at that point.
Summerstage is near 72nd street, so you might want to visit the Dakota and
Strawberry Fields on the West Side, or go in at 79th street on the East Side
and see the Alice in Wonderaland statue and the model sailboat pond on the
way down. There is sometimes a charge for the tickets, but this show is free
although they would like a donation.
I usually don't go into the arena. There is a very nice open area right
behind the bleachers, several acres, where you can lay out a blanket with
some wine and food and enjoy the music with a bunch of people. Or just buy a
real cold beer or two from one of the strolling (illegal) vendors, or hot
dogs, soda, pretzels, etc from the legal ones.
Of course, if you HAVE to see the band, you can pop in afterwards if it's a
free show and watch for a while. It's not the nicest venue inside. It's
basically a giant volleyball court, and it's kind of sandy and dusty, not so
nice on a windy day. There are bleachers in the back facing the stage, and a
big open space in front where people throw down blankets or bring small
chairs. Real nice stage and sound, though.
I'm not sure how big this band is in New York, but getting there 45 minutes
early or so should get you a bleacher seat if you choose to go that way.
Elvis Costello is playing there this Friday, so I'll be listening.
