<< From what I read (I think it was Rhino's Greatest Hits) Del toured with the
Beatles in the UK in 1963. When he got back to the USA he recorded that song
and released it as a single in late 63. It was the first american cover of a
Beatles song, but wasnt a big hit. >>
and PS:
My Canuck B.Boys combo E. Summer had the immense pleasure of not only opening
for, but providing back-up band duty for Del once, at a big outdoor festival
sometime during the second Reagan administration if memory serves.
Of course I asked Del about the Fab connection, and he (like Little Richard
and other names who'd already worked with the band in Hamburg and Liverpool)
were very impressed with how much the Beatles had "the American sound" ...Del
being particularly impressed by John & Paul's Everlys abilities especially.
Richard had already put in a good word Stateside to his then employers, Vee
Jay Records, and Del later did his share by covering the guys' current UK
chart-topper, "From Me To You," in the Spring of 63. He said he stayed in touch
with the band too, visiting them in Florida for their second Ed Sullivan show,
f'rinstance.
My fave semi-personal Del story however? When he first showed up at our
manager's house to rehearse before our gig, he paused as he was about to plug in
his guitar. "Does this amp belong to one of you guys, or is it a rental?" he
asked. "No, it's a rental," we replied. "Good!" the man smirked, as he turned
up to eleven and proceeded to remain at Ramone volume throughout the
remainder of our two glorious days together ;-)
