Well, I already posted that the NJ and NYC area college radio stations of
the early to mid 80s were instrumental in expanding my musical horizons.
Since then, a couple of the songs that stuck in my mind from that period
have come to mind, so I thought I'd toss them out.
One was Where's Captain Kirk? by Athletico Spizz '80 (later covered by
R.E.M. on a holiday single). Another was Warm Leatherette by The Normal
(later covered by Grace Jones). Also, When I Dream by The Teardrop
Explodes. Money by the Flying Lizards? (I actually bought that single.)
And don't forget Clocks Are Big (Machines Are Heavy) by the
aforementioned Spizz.
There's something else I remember from then that I haven't been able to
find anywhere on the net. One of the stations used to play songs by a
guy named "Ivan Imbecile", obviously a fake name. The gag was that Ivan
spoke and "sang" (in a mostly spoken way) with a miscellaneous eastern
European accent over what must have been early Karaoke versions of
popular songs, never getting the words quite right. (I remember one of
the songs he did was Gilbert O'Sullivan's Get Down, with the words
"You're a bad dog baby, my stick is out of bounds".) Then he would be
interviewed in studio and would usually end up yelling at the dj. I
taped some of his act off the radio. The tape is somewhere.
