I received my copy yesterday, and have listened to about half of it, and my
reaction is not nearly as negative or positive as I've read here. It
strikes me in a similar fashion to Suzanne Vega migrating away from her folk
roots. The biggest difference for me, is that I find Suzanne Vega's songs
to maintain her "voice" better than Liz Phair's. I find some of the songs
on Liz Phair rather uninteresting - not unique or specific the her, rather
much like too much like other artists. I find this common to songs produced
by both the Matrix and Michael Penn. Though I'm enjoying a good chunk of
the CD, I guess I felt that Liz could do better. On the other hand, there
are plenty of artists that do much worse - Ms. Phair's worst is still better
than most of the stuff on radio today.
