I read an interesting interview with Liz Phair in the Hamilton Spectator
this past weekend that was quite revealing in that the media is portraying
Phair's new album as an Avril Lavigne inspired commercial sell-out. Phair's
wanted it known that the label had no say in how she approached the new
record and that the Avril Lavigne inspiration was the logical means to go
BACK to the direction she had attempted to on her first album -- which the
label couldn't grasp back then....especially with the fact that she had
absolutely zero vocabularly for describing to her producers or label reps
that she wanted to make a loud, pop- oriented ROCK record.
Instead, it turned into a precious minimalist affair with Phair flailing,
publicly, through her own musical growth....something she is embarassed
about, but fans and media have turned into a Holy audio epiphany.
Not defending the lady, but I find it quite refreshing that she's willing to
sacrifice over half her fanbase to delve into the pop medium she's ALWAYS
desired to be part of...even if the world feels she's sold out.
