They Might Be giants are VERY guilty of this.  It always endeared me to the 
band.  They were (it seemed) music geek like me.  Some have already been 
mentioned, but I would add the tunes:

Rhthym Section Want Ad ("Do you sing like Olive Oil on Purpose / You guys 
must be into the Eurhthyics") - This song was about themselves as it was 
other bands, I think.

Also Twistin' ("She doesn't have to have her (db's / Young Fresh Fellows) 
tapes back)

In you I confide / Red dragon tattoo / I'm fit to be dyed / Am I fit to have 
you?
