mine was madness' (madnesses?) self-titled release,
which i believe was some kind of smorgasbord of their
recent hits in the uk repackaged attractively for US
comsumption...i believe i was 11, or thereabouts. and
it was a CASSETTE. I musta listened to "It Must Be
Love" about 60 godzillion times that year. It TOTALLY
ERODED my estimation of Christopher Cross, my previous
fave which had been a gift (on 8-track).
someone mentioned the doodles he did on the cover of
his first...I was just at a friend's house sunday and
a few of us had dug out old vinyl for purposes of a
sunday-afternoon-brunch-n-dance-party (ala Depeche
Mode's "Everything Counts" and the gothem city mix of
the Communard's "Don't Leave Me This Way") and she had
an 80s SMASH HITS vinyl comp. which included, among
other 80s SMASH HITS, "Brass In Pocket...." In
writing the titles of the songs she liked best on the
inside sleeve, she had sneakily underlined the "ass"
of Brass in Pocket, being a subversive 9 year old and
finding any way possible to swear. My other friend
has a Shaun Cassidy album that says all over it, in
her own gleeful childish hand, "I DO REALLY LOVE SHAUN
CASSIDY." She's not sure now who would dare question
her love for him: probably that Anna Borg girl down
the block who thought that only SHE loved Shaun
Cassidy, REALLY?
anyway, I ADORE these little snippets of our childhood
selves, and am thinking of writing something like "I
DO REALLY LOVE THE SHINS" on the inside of my "oh,
inverted world," just so I can find it 30 years hence
and chuckle at my youthful inanity.
(or, i suppose, i could just read the audities
archives, yikes. shutting up now.)
