In 1974, at the very late age of 15, my first album purchases were cassettes
of The Beatles "1962-1966" and "1967-1970". I had $30 to spend, and I had
my choices narrowed down to a stop watch (I was really into watches
then-still am) or those tapes. I asked my mom what I should do, and though
my mom pretty much despised rock 'n roll, she said something like "The
Beatles music will live on forever, so I think you should buy the tapes".
Thank you, Mom!

I didn't even own a turntable until the following year. I think the first
actual record I bought was McCartney's "Ram" album, but I'm not 100% sure.
Funny, I remember my mom asking "Why do you need a turntable? You don't
have any records?". Let's just say I changed her mind pretty quickly. :-)
