Just got back from a weekend w/ my family in Aspen(birthplace of Not Lame)
and just here this. His passing, sadly, has been expected for a little
while now as he's been sick and in pain for far too long now.... and I just
have to say a little something about Greg, as he was a gem of human being
and an early inspiration for the whole launching of Not Lame in late 1994.
Indulge me, please.

See, I called him when I got this dumb-ass idea of starting Not Lame in
1994(and let's face it, starting a label ranks up there at the top of not
terribly smart ways to spend ones' money) after buying some of his early
releases to just talk about the whole idea.

Of course, in his inimitable style, he said I was delirious to even ponder
the thought, but if I insisted he'd be there to answer any questions, etc.
met him a few years later and had the pleasure of hanging with him at some
terrible and not-so-terrible Poptopia gigs during its heyday and the
esteemed pleasure to sit next to him at one of the earliest of Jon Brion
gigs at Largo.

I enjoyed quite a few cigarettes along side(thanks for letting me bum 'em,
mate!) breaks in the music as ranted and raved about shitty pop bands but
when he found that nugget that moved him, look out. You'd have to muzzle
him. You'd be like 'uh, gotta go the bathroom, greg....B right back'.

But what was so special about Greg was he an impressario with his "own" way
of doing things and making things up as they went along and not stressing
the details and just getting to the music, which was a direct influence on
my own 'style'(or whatever it is). He was laid back but would not budge on
certain things that were principles for his way of living, doing business or
just dealing w/ life in LA(well, okay he'd never admit to being from LA!).

The indie music biz, the indie pop community lost a dear ' n good friend
this weekend. even if you did not know him, if you were a supporter of
great indie pop music(he detested the term 'power pop' and thought I was
even more delirious to be associated with it and I think he always got a
kick of my perpetual response of 'I don't give a rat's ass about what people
think' becauase that's how he felt, too), he was terribly important for
building a strong foundation of principled DIY/indie music in the early/mid
90's, in particular, before the internet. It was, simply, an inspiration for
me and Not Lame.

It sounds like he died while I was driving my family over Independence Pass,
one of the more beautiful drives in North America, on Saturday.....he loved
Colorado, too....but I think he would have enjoyed seeing a golf course on a
few sections of this pass. ;-) (if you saw a hippie looking guy on a course
in Southern California kicking everybody's butt, it was probably
Greg--honestly, I think he might have been more passionate about golf than
music, I wondered).

God Bless You, Greg! I am missing you already, buddy.....you were my kind
of curmudgeon! :-D

Last statement of fact: HOLLIES IN REVERSE is, without question, the best
tribute record ever, by a longshot!
