I haven't heard any discussion of this Rainbow Quartz band here, but they
should appeal to fans of Cosmic Rough Riders. Their lead singer sounds an
awful lot like Chris Hickey, which fits their post-modern folk rock thing to
a T. Fans of the General Store and the Grip Weeds also might want to check
this puppy out.
Since Gary Pig and Sean P. have piped up about Simply Saucer -- great
record. Not really Audities fare (i.e. not pop) but this is a proto-punk
band who took a heaping helping of the Velvet Underground along with some
other interesting influences and made some cool rock music. Some of it is
comparable to Pere Ubu, though more tuneful, and some of it is in the
league, both sound and qualitywise, of The Modern Lovers. The press release
is full of quotes from the album's first reissue, with critics falling over
themselves to praise the thing. The first couple of plays, I was unmoved.
Then it started hitting me.
A few other things I'm writing up reviews for -- good new Neilson Hubbard
disc, Martin Gordon's swell return to performing his own tunes, The
Cloudsmen, a Canadian band in the Nines/XTC vein, Heathrow, an Anglophile
Milwaukee band that rocks, and the splendid new Clem Snide record (a real
happy love song disc).
