Not the usual fare for Audities...but The Indigo Girls
will be on my radio program Saturday afternoon (June
28th) in addition to some great new tracks from The
Better Days, Fountains Of Wayne and some other
artists. For those who aren't familiar with The
Better Days - it's the latest band with Rob Bonfiglio
from Wanderlust and Blush. Here's the link for
today's broadcast online:

It will be 8PM to 11PM east coast time and 5PM to 8PM
west coast time.

I've been having a hard time trying to figure out what
my first 45 or album purchase was. It's a tough call
but I think the 45 was "Tie A Yellow Ribbon Around The
Old Oak Tree" from Tony Orlando and Dawn. I really
dug the flip side as well - "Has Anybody Seen My Sweet
Gypsy Rose". Maybe the next one was "Live and Let
Die" from Wings with yet another great flip side - "I
Lie Around". I'm pretty sure the Tony Orlando and
Dawn record was the one because there was a girl in
the picture in that time frame who I was madly in love
with.

I'm at the tail end of a bunch of baby boomers from my
parents. With that being said, there was no music
from all of my brothers and sisters left lying around
because my parents moved to Hawaii which meant that
after I was born I was raised like an only child. It
always amazed my parents (who enjoyed music) that I
ended up purchasing all the music that they sold at a
garage sale never thinking that a future child would
dig those same sounds. My dad used to deal with
jukeboxes so I did get those on occasion. The
"rejects" from the jukebox were either the pristine
45s that nobody would play or the white 45s that had
to be replaced because the needle wore out the vinyl
from being the most played. Quite the variety from
Bobby Vinton to Carol Douglas.

As a kid, I picked up a lot of Disney records...they
had these cool EPs that had four songs for 49 cents.
I remember the dread that I got when I got home one
with my dad to see a record album box leaning against
our front door from the mailman with my name on it. I
didn't order anything from mail. I was confused as my
dad started to open it only to discover that it was a
"Dumbo" 12 inch that I won in a Nestle Quik contest
that had a tie in to Disney. I believe the record was
the last category where 5000 of those puppies were
given away. The contest was over a year earlier and
was sent 4th class which meant it was forgotten by me.
My dad only laughed. He couldn't believe that I
filled out an entry form and mailed it out at such a
young age.

So I won that album...but for the life of me I can't
figure out what was my first album purchase. I spent
my allowance on soundtrack albums like "The Towering
Inferno" and "Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid". I
remember buying the first double anthology of The
Lovin' Spoonful but unsure if I got one of John B.
Sebastian's solo releases first.

A lot of musical turning points like The Lovin'
Spoonful and The Beatles which lead to The Monkees,
The Moody Blues, The Bee Gees and The Zombies. I
won't go on about Herb Alpert and The Tijuana
Brass...it's a tough one to explain. I still can't
believe that A&M (what is left of it in name only)
will not put out all of his albums on CD. It was his
label to begin with. I remember when CDs first came
out, most of his albums were released. I should have
picked them all up because they are very hard to find.

Blondie and Elvis Costello - another turning point
which open the doors to The Undertones, Nick Lowe,
Squeeze and The Incredible Shrinking Dickies.

Like most of the gals and guys on this list, there are
just too many moments that shape your musical tastes
that make no connection with your friends who see
Randy Newman AND Josie And The Pussycats in a record
collection that shouldn't belong to a "power pop" fan.
I'm sure we've all had our moments when Klaatu or The
Producers ends up in the hands of a friend going thru
your library who asks with a stare that looks like he
or she ate the worst thing imaginable, "Who on Earth
are these guys?".

As usual, I've rambled on and got off the subject.

Aloha,
Michael McCartney
KEAO / KONI / KPMW
