Jaimie Vernon - Broadcasts From The Twilight Zone
Bullseye
Over the years Gary Pig Gold has introduced me to a number of new people in
the music business, and one of the most important for getting The NAIL fired
up and plugged back in has been Jaimie Vernon, president of Bullseye Records
Canada. Gary assured me that like himself and myself, Jaimie was a huge
music fan, first and foremost, propelled by the same passion for great tunes
that make us get up and face that rotten old world every day, and he was
right! Jaimie started his label as a means to re-release long-deleted albums
by his Canadian music heroes, but as time went on he began releasing new
material also, so along with holding the keys to the vault of Goddo, among
others, he is also releasing their new studio album, "Kings Of The Stoned
Age." Somewhere along the way he also decided to visit his own vault of
tunes, pulled out about 25 promising songs, and elected to re-record them
with the technology and studio he never had access to before. The result is
'Broadcasts From The Twilight Zone."

(Before I move along, I think I'd better mention that Jaimie used to have a
band called Moving Targetz, back in the day, and if I'm not mistaken they
were played a few times on CFNY (Toronto) and made it onto one of their
"Homegrown" albums. In that band he played bass and contributed vocals)

This album is a beautiful example of what happens when you find a musical
partner who is not only a friend, but a person capable of making your
original vision a reality. Jaimie's longtime buddy, Brian Gagnon (who some
of you might recall as the original vocalist and bassist for The Hunt)
offered to contribute the studio time and musical backup necessary to get
Jaimie's demo tapes turned into proper songs, and he did an outstanding job.
With Jaimie mostly doing just vocals and some guitar and bass, and Brian
doing the rest, plus a lot of arranging and that sort of thing, what came
about is first and foremost a collection of great pop tunes. This is
wonderful stuff! "I Am A TV Show" makes clever use of the titles of
television programs and also makes a commentary on what a big part of our
lives TV has become. "Secrets Of The Universe" is based on what could have
been a fatal plunge off a 400 foot cliff in Utah. "If Paradise Should Fall"
is a love song with a bit of a U2 feel. "Exiled On Planet Pop" is about the
current state of disillusionment real musicians feel as they are
increasingly pushed aside in favour of the pop flavour of the moment. Heck,
there's even a "dirty" song, "Gone Tantric," which Jaimie wrote when he was
15. (Don't worry Jaimie - this one can't even come close to Liz Phair's
latest!) On top of that there are three covers included, "Rebel Rebel" by
Bowie, "Lonely Out There" by The Sweet, and "Sub-Rosa Subway" by Jaimie's
favourite band, Klaatu, plus some demos which show that his voice is much
nicer, and deeper, than it was when he did these back in the early 80's.
"Broadcasts From The Twilight Zone" is really a musical scrapbook of the
life of one Jaimie Vernon, with pictures, anecdotes and all, and I'm glad he
recorded this, because most of all, it's a collection of great songs which
deserve to be heard.
