My girlfriend and I saw Lou's 1920's Tudor-style home in Hancock Park at an
"open house" the other weekend. Down in his basement, I found all these old
awards -- falling apart -- totally in a state of neglect. I was tempted to
pocket a detached brass trophy plaque that read something like
"Congratulations, Lou Rawls, from the Upstate New York Grape Growers
Coalition of 1971" or some such banality. I thought better and went,
instead, to scope out his medicine cabinets for codeine and vicoden (just
kidding, of course; I'd never consider such a thing).
The house had been 'violated' by the way, meaning that most of the original
details had been remodeled out of existence. Pity. There's nothing quite
like finding an orange and avocado 1970's kitchen in a 1920's classic home.
