My top 10, in chronological order (or as close as I could come):

1. My next-door neighbor gave me a copy of the Beatles' "20 Greatest Hits"
on vinyl. This was the first and greatest epiphany of them all, and the one
from which all others indirectly sprang forth.

2. While visiting my aunt Rose Marie and uncle Sammy, who had cable, I saw
my first video: "(Keep Feeling) Fascination," by the Human League.

3. Buying Men At Work's "Cargo" before buying "Business As Usual," thereby
beginning a trend of not really latching onto artists until they're already
on their commercial decline. This trend went on hiatus until I bought
a-ha's "Stay On These Roads" before "Hunting High and Low" and "Scoundrel
Days," but, since then, it's been pretty prominent among my buying
tendencies.

4. Seeing Van Halen on the "1984" tour as my very first concert, on the
night that Casey Kasem had called the band to inform them that "Jump" had
just gone to #1. (David Lee Roth announced it to the crowd.)

5. Bought Motley Crue's "Theater of Pain" and the Alarm's "Strength" on the
same day...and, after multiple listens to both albums (how else to explain
still knowing the chorus to the Crue's "Keep Your Eye On The Money" AND the
Alarm's "Knife Edge"?), finally decided that it was cooler to like the
Alarm, simply because not everyone liked the Alarm...but, as far as my peer
group was concerned, everyone DID like the Crue.

6. Bought the Cult's "Electric" on a whim, after being assured by a cute
alternative chick that they were really good. The epiphany, however, didn't
come for over a year, because it took me that long to bring myself to listen
to anything other than their cover of "Born To Be Wild."

7. Went to see "Sid and Nancy" at the Naro Cinema in Norfolk / heard "Never
Mind The Bollocks, Here's The Sex Pistols" for the first time. (Both
happened on the same night.) I was given official proof that life existed
beyond top-40 radio AND MTV, and I loved it.

8. Listened to the Smiths' "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" on a
ratty boom-box in the employee break room of the McDonald's in Great Bridge
and decided that these lyrics..."And if a double-decker bus / Crashes into
us / To die by your side / Is such a heavenly way to die / And if a ten-ton
truck / Kills the both of us / To die by your side / Well, the pleasure, the
privilege is mine"...were among the most romantic of all time, and that
Morrissey's angst would always get me through the toughest of times.

9. Discovered "120 Minutes."

10. Picked up a used / promo copy of "Yellow Pills, Vol. 1" at a slightly
shady CD / comic / baseball card shop in Kempsville.
